Telescope Viewing

FAQ: Telescope viewing in the Waikato.

Where and when can I come to a telescope viewing evening?

The best public telescopes in the Waikato are at Hamilton Observatory, which is open on the first Wednesday of every month except January. See www.has.org.nz for details.

Te Awamutu Space Centre has a solar telescope for viewing the Sun during daytime. We don't often get the telescopes out during the evening but we do occasionally — usually in conjunction with our indoor presentations. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for details.

Can young children use the telescopes?

They are welcome to try but we can't guarantee that your children will see anything. Telescope viewing is a bit tricky for younger kids and it's common for those under 7 years old to struggle. To avoid disappointment it's best not to build their expectations too much before you come.

It might help if you can get your children to practice using binoculars or a cheap telescope before you take them to an astronomical telescope.

Can disabled people use the telescopes?

Some of them, some of the time. For example, sometimes the eyepiece will be well positioned for a person in a wheelchair but sometimes it will need to be much higher and require a stepladder to use.

The main telescope at Hamilton Observatory is up a flight of stairs; other telescopes are mounted on tripods on the ground.

Should I wear my glasses?

Whatever suits you... Try with and without your glasses and then go with the option that works best.

How should I dress?

More warmly than you think. It gets surprisingly cold outside at night when you're not really moving.
